Nevada Theatre (II)

George C. Goble opened the second Nevada Theatre in Wells in the fall of 1947, which was covered periodically in the Reno Evening Gazette. The 450-seat theatre had a cry room, upstairs living quarters and downstairs office space rented to the Forest Service. Mr. Goble’s first request to build a theatre in Wells had been denied by the government but once approved in April 1947 Intermountain Theatre Supply of Salt Lake City was awarded the contract for the building and equipment.

Mr. Goble had been operating theatres in Wells since July 24, 1929, when he bought the first Nevada Theatre in Wells from Mrs. M.E. Curd. It is assumed that he closed that theatre when the new one opened. Mr. Goble also served as a member of the War Price and Ration Board during World War II.

The instalment of CinemaScope equipment and screen was completed in October 1954 and the Nevada Theatre was serviced by the Salt Lake City film exchange as their are a few mentions of Mr. Goble being there on business.

On May 2, 1960, the Gazette reported on Mr. Goble’s retirement and the sale of the theatre to Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Calton. Mr. Calton was assistant postmaster and the Calton’s planned to retain Mrs. Phil Sharp, who had ushered for Mr. Goble since 1929.

Google Streetview of June 2019 shows the theatre as pretty much still intact, with marquee, blade sign, poster boxes and foyer. Just like it’s asleep.
