Turner Hall was designed in 1874 for the Turnverein Society to house a gymnastics center for German immigrants. It opened in 1876. But in 1906, Walter Pete and Neals Petersen of Pete & Petersen, installed the city’s first permanent film projector. In 1907, the town got a second movie theatre in downtown. The Temple Theatre closed in June of 1908 when thieves stole the projector.
The theatre became the Marvel Electric Theatre on May 14, 1910 and split time with Turner Hall which continued to schedule live events. A.J. Arnold ran the short-lived theatre which was put out of business by new competitors with better theatres. In the 1920’s, Turner Hall was converted to an auto garage and over the next 100 years, it had been converted into a space for two retailers / offices.
