Not to be confused with the long-standing former Wonderland Theatre turned Cameron Theatre (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures) is the New Cameron Theatre located just a block away. It opened in an existing building after the Milam Theatre burned on July 27, 1961 ending its run. The town’s screenings were carried by the 77 Drive-In until Robert Scott opened here with Charlton Heston in “Ben-Hur” on February 7, 1962 as the Preston Royal Theatre. 77 Drive-In owner Fred Smith bought the Preston Royal Theatre on March 15, 1962. Late in July of 1962, Reed Whatley bought both theatres. On February 14, 1963, he changed the name from the Preston Royal to the New Cameron Theatre.
The New Cameron Theatre showed both English language and later added Spanish language films to the Hollywood blockbusters. It stayed at 118 S. Houston Street as the Cameron Theater until closing in the video age in 1984.
