The $400,000 Hallandale Theatre launched in the Hallandale Shopping Center on Nevember 27, 1968 with Sean Connery in “Shalako”. The theatre featured a 632-seat auditorium and a lobby with oak panelling. Alfred Meyer and Ira Sichelman launched the venue. It was listed in 1969 as a Chris McGuire Cinema Circuit operation. Wometco Theatres then took on the venue.
As a movie theatre, the single screener closed September 18, 1986 with Daniel Day Lewis in “My Beautiful Laundrette”. The theatre had one more chance as the short-lived Jerry Grant’s Showplace at the Hallandale Theater aka the Hallandale Theatre. It played Yiddish live stage shows and entertainment. In the middle of a stage play engagement, the theatre abruptly closed on March 6, 1988 permanently. The theatre was a few doors away from Publix and was retrofitted for other purposes.

I remember this theater as a kid growing up in S. Florida. We would sometimes go here, even though it was a bit of a drive, if what we wanted to see wasn’t playing anywhere closer. Though I’m sure there were others, the first film I remember seeing here was The Jazz Singer (dragged by my parents), and then I saw The Seduction, with Morgan Fairchild. And when I was a freshman in high school, I went to see Fanny & Alexander, but it was a little too sophisticated for me. I think the last two films I saw here were Night, Mother and Blue Velvet.
It really was a nice, big, ornate looking house, and one that thankfully did not succumb to twinning.
