The GCC Sherman Oaks Cinema III-IV-V was an addition to its very popular twin-screen complex just across the street though facing Van Nuys Boulevard that General Cinema had opened on June 16, 1976. The GCC triplex launched on March 16, 1978 with a premiere of “Casey’s Shadow” with actors from the film including Michael Hershawe in attendance. The theatre then opened with its true grand opening to the public on March 17, 1978 with “Straight Time” with Dustin Hoffman, “Crossed Swords” (aka “Prince and the Pauper”) with Raquel Welch, and “Casey’s Shadow” continuing.
The theatre’s narrow shoe box screens were definitely second-tier when compared to the original Sherman Oaks twin screener. The theatre was playing “Pelican Brief,” “Shadowlands,” and “Grumpier Old Men” on January 16, 1994. In the early morning hours on Monday, January 17, 1994 the Northridge earthquake rocked the area and closed both theatres. The circuit was able to reopen the twin screen facility on January 28, 1994. The GCC II-IV-V had more serious damage and was eventually replaced a five screen facility that continued operation for around 25 years until March of 2020 before closing for the COVID-19 pandemic.
