The \Romeo Theatre was opened in the late-1930’s. My uncle A.S. Johnson Jr.’s Johnson Construction Company theatre list includes the Romeo Theatre job in Romeo, Michigan. Al Johnson Sr. shot a Kodachrome slide of the theatre in August 1948. The Romeo Theatre was closed in 1967 and became a nightclub. It was demolished for a parking lot on December 13, 1973.
I’ve found a website with info on a different Romeo Theatre in Romeo, Michigan, but it’s a newer theatre in a different location.

Andy, it’s not difficult to have Kodachrome slides digitized. There are many places to do it inexpensively, such as Walgreens. Then you can upload them to the site.

I’ve uploaded a slide that Al Johnson Sr. shot in August 1948. The 1948 film “Winter Meeting” starring Bette Davis and James Davis, is shown on the marquee. The image shows a fairly new building in “art moderne” style with a beautiful two-tone blue color scheme. The Romeo Theatre is one of a handful of Johnson projects that deviated from his trademark standard cream and red colors.
A used car lot is seen to the left of the theater, and an automotive garage to the right.
Unfortunately, the Romeo Theatre building has since been razed and replaced by a one-story building housing the People Driven Credit Union.
The Romeo Theatre was built in the late ‘30s. It closed in 1967 and operated as the nightclub Mother’s from July-August 11, 1968. The MC5 were one of several bands to play the club during its brief existence. After Mother’s closed due to public pressure, the building became a nightclub again called Kaleidoscope, which lasted a year. It was then left vacant until being demolished for a bank parking lot on September 13, 1973. The correct address is 145 South Main Street.
