Opened as a Temperance Hall in may 1890. Used for live entertainment from 1890 to 1920’s. Used as an ice skating rink on 30th September 1918. Known as Bijou Theatre from the 1920’s. Opened as Hobart’s first talkie theatre opening on 11th March 1932. Became Hobart’s only 70mm theatre, in 1966 screening “My Fair Lady”. Taken over by Village Cinemas in July 1969. Closed in November 1976.
Became an electrical store(Danny Bourke Electrical) from 1976 to circa 2009. Then became a weekend market until September 2017, when it was sold for 1,200,000 Australian dollars. There are plans to convert it into a church(Hillsong Church). The theatre building has been Heritage Listed(date unknown?). 936 seats(1937), 927 seats(1951), 756 seats(1966).
