The Royal Theatre is Fairmount’s first motion picture theatre for the city itself, and it opened in April 1908. The theatre was managed by a person known as Davies but his full name has not been revealed yet. This theatre on its first few months commonly demonstrated vaudeville, but later added motion picture industry a few months later.
Something very unique came out-of-the-blue at approximately 2½ years ago. A familiar group and company entitled “The Butterfields” were massively popular across the United States for abilities in each picture on an early-phase of sound during portions of the late-1900’s and early-1910’s. On December 12, 1910, they went to Fairmount at the Royal Theatre. Not just the Butterfields, but illustrated songs and a musical program by the Lambiottes also takes its part as well.
The Royal Theatre is also home to sporting events as well during the 1920’s.
The theatre closed for a several months during 1929 for new management, and reopened on December 21, 1929. The reason why it closed its doors is because the theatre has been leased by the Dale Brothers to J. V. and H. M. Fahl of Fairmount who’re arranged to reopen the house. Not just that, but talkies were also equipped and installed as well.
Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s, the Royal Theatre had a variety of hand changes and operator switchovers.
Right when the 1930’s rolled along, 2 more theatres were then added to the city of Fairmount. There is a short-lived Fairmount Theatre which opened on December 8, 1935 and continued throughout 1936 until closing later that year, and the popular Palace Theatre which opened on October 1, 1937 and closed in late-September 1956 before becoming a bar on July 27, 1961. Moviegoers in portions of Fairmount after the closure of the Palace Theatre will have to go to Muncie to see films.
The Royal Theatre was listed a (Closed) in the 1934 edition of Film Daily Yearbook. It was reopened but closed its doors for the final time in June 1937, however it was used for retailing and special needs during the rest of the late-1930’s.
