Middletown Cinema 10

Opened early-1982 by C.A.T.E. Enterprises, replacing its twinned mall parking lot Orange Plaza Cinema with a more efficient multiplex. (December 1981, “Neighbors” opened at the Plaza Twin; January 22, 1982 “On Golden Pond” at the Cinemas Six, per NY Times advertisements). Initially with six screens built in never-rented retail space in a strip mall anchored by a Caldor department store. Eventually expended into a tenplex both by splitting existing screens and taking over adjoining retail space to build more. USA Cinemas then Loews Theatres took it over. Sony/Loews replaced it with its tenplex at the Crystal Run Galleria (now the AMC Crystal Run 16) and very briefly ran both the old and new triplexes. All of the projection equipment was used from other closed theaters, and none two projection and sound system setups seemed alike. Some of the auditoriums had aisles down the center. None of the initial six had Dolby. The rake wasn’t very good. But for a good number of years this was the movie theatre in the area. After closing, the cinema was converted to a gym and smaller retail spaces.
