The tiny town of Wayne, Oklahoma had two movie theatres in its history. The first was opened by a group of local business persons as the Wayne Theatre in 1919. The silent movie house was celebrating its tenth anniversary but on September 9, 1929, a tornado tore through the town destroying the building and many neighboring structures. For more than 15 years, the town appears to have been theatre-less.
After World War II, Arthur Modesto created a new Wayne Theatre. The 230-seat new Wayne Theatre was launched on April 26, 1946 with Robert Benchley starring in “Snafu”. Tuesday nights featured “Jackpot Night” at the theatre. Though it’s indicative of little, the Wayne’s final advertisement was in 1952 which may - or may not - be the theatre’s final year of operation.
