The 200-seat Jewell Theatre opened in the mid-1920’s in downtown Utica, Nebraska. The Jewell Theatre was part a circuit of silent film theatres in small towns in the State that appears to have had trouble financing the shift to sound films. The Jewell Theatre in Utica closed briefly as a silent house in 1930 before the community businesses rallied to save it. A new operator was identified with the theatre converted to sound and renamed the Empire Theatre.

The Empire Theatre suffered a fire in 1937 and fell into periods of darkness until fully repaired in 1940. It then would change its name to the Utica Theatre. It was still going in the 1950’s but likely closed in the television age.
