The Lyda Theatre was an early Plum Street silent movie theatre in downtown Doniphan. In 1915, Lester W. Jewell took on the venue calling it the Doniphan Theatre and then the Jewell Theatre in 1917. It may have been associated with the many Jewell Theatres that dotted the small towns of Nebraska in the silent era. Due to the diminutive size of the town, it was only open three days a week - Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Jewell sold the theatre to Jack Davis in 1922 and the name drifted for several years between Jewel and Jewell before settling on Jewell. Davis closed the theatre on December 25, 1926. However, the theatre continued to host agricultural events, auctions, and dances. It varied between the Jewell Hall and the Jewell Theatre depending on the event. The Jewell Theatre was not converted to sound and was likely converted to a fraternal hall in 1929.
