The original Heun Hall dates back to the Czech community of the area which built the structure in 1878. Blacksmith Harry Heun was one of two donors of land on which the structure was built. German and Czech immigrants frequented the original Hall. New Heun Hall was built in 1913. On January 4, 1914, the stakeholders voted to add movies to the Heun Hall at a cost of $250.56. That brought the venue hand-cranked projectors with carbide gas lights becoming a full-fledged theatre called Heun Hall Theatre and then Heun Theatre.
Heun Hall Theatre launched with films on June 18, 1914 with two shows weekly. On the “off days”, the venue also hosted dances, community speeches, religious services, and a multitude of other live events. But the theatre did not transition to sound ending motion pictures in June of 1931. The operation reverted back to its original name of Heun Hall. It stayed in usage and - though not an opera house - struggled in the same vein as many small town opera houses after the war with rare live plays and sporadic dances.
Heun Hall was shuttered in 1963 and, in 1968 it was auctioned off. However, the building was purchased, refurbished and served as a place of worship. The structure’s 100th anniversary was recognized, as well. The town of Heun no longer exists as a recognized city but rather an unincorporated community in Colfax County, Nebraska. So the next town over of Midland explains its placement here.
