The Starland Drive-In, located four miles east of Welch, was opened on July 6, 1950 with speakers for 450 cars by Weldon Cook and Robert Livingston Russell, Sr.; the first Drive-In in McDowell County.
The theatre operated from March through November showing six different movies a week. By 1955 it was operated by Lloyd E. Rogers.
Due to the advent of television and the reduction in population in this coal region the Drive-In closed on May 31, 1986.

This has been demolished. Address is not Welch, but Kimball. Maitland and Superior are to the west before you get to Welch. The site is now a housing complex. The address used is 600 W Main St, although it’s really more the 26600 or 26700 block of Coal Heritage Rd (US 52).
Closed May 31, 1986. Low income Starland Heights built on the premises.
