The Windsor was already listed in 1923 in a Paramount Week ad.

This closed around May 17, 1956 when it disappeared from the New York Times movie pages after a run of “DIABOLIQUE”.

Although the theater is long gone, was their any connection to the Hotel Beverly which continues to operate at 50th St. & Lexington Ave?

re: Gerald A. DeLuca’s post of Nov.1, 2005

I have recently submitted the Modern Playhouse, an outlet for Hungarian films once located at 82nd Street and Third Avenue.

Current eBay auction has a nice 1955 image of the theater. Jerry

I didn’t know where to make this query, but I just found a reference to a Third Avenue theatre called the Modern Playhouse. A 1937 review of the Hungarian film Aranyember talks of “a smoothly running and engaging picture in ‘Man of Gold,’ now at the Modern Playhouse in Third Avenue.” Where on Third Avenue was this theatre and did it have other names? I couldn’t find it listed.

The 1930 Film Daily Yearbook has this listed as the Windsor Theatre, 823 Third Ave, with 455 seats.

F.D.Y.B. editions for 1941 and 1943 have the Beverly Theater listed at 523 Third Ave (obviously a misprint) as by the 1950 edition it is back up at # 823 Third Ave again.

It appears that a typo error may have been made in the address for the Beverly. If you Mapquest 523 Third Avenue, the theater shows as being located at 34th Street and Third Avenue. In reality it was located at 50th and Third.

The address should be 823 Third Avenue, which then maps out correctly near the corner of 50th Street between 50th and 51st Streets.

Does anyone have any other information about this mostly forgotten nabe house?
