R.S. Lee opened the Pickford Theatre on January 1, 1917 with Mabel Taliaferro in “God’s Half Acre” supported by the serial, “The Grip of Evil” with Jackie Saunders and live entertainment by the Cofer’s Musical Review. All 500 seats were filled for the opening. A new screen, a new owner and a patriotic new name came on April 30, 1918 with the documentary, “France in Arms”.
A fire on April 28, 1930 changed the direction of the Liberty Theatre. The theatre received a new operator who installed a sound system under the name of the Empress Theatre. The first show was Joan Crawford in “Montana Moon” on July 25, 1930. It appears to have ceased operations after the January 17, 1931 screening of “Her Man” with Helen Twelvetrees. The Marietta Bakery retrofitted the space two months later.
The Empress Theatre would be followed by both a Queen Theatre and a King Theatre as the royalty continued in downtown Marietta.
