The new Digital Gym Cinema, with 200 seats, opened for previews January 28, 2022. The first Digital Gym Cinema, with 46 seats, was located at its previous location on El Cajon Boulevard from 2010 to 2020.
Digital Gym Cinema has partnered with the Sundance Film Festival as one of its Satellite Screens and will show eight Sundance films on its preview weekend with an official opening in the Spring. KPBS television notes the Sundance Film Festival experience will be replicated with an opening night reception, a red carpet, and post film discussions.
The cinema is operated by Media Arts Center, in a building owned by UC San Diego. This description is provided: “Our programs, events, and film festivals are diverse and inclusionary; they are designed with participants and community collaboration in mind. Showcases for LGBTQ films and filmmakers, Jewish-Latino filmmakers, women filmmakers, and others address film artists and audiences who are often disenfranchised.”
The opening films were “La Guerra Civil”, produced and directed by Eva Longoria Bastón and ‘"Alice", directed and written by Krystin Ver Linden.

FYI The cinema is only 58 seats but it is a gorgeous, state of the art micro cinema. I program films there as part of Film Geeks SD.
