The Opera House was constructed sometime before 1892, likely in conjunction with the Odd Fellows, who had a lodge on the second floor of the front section.
This was a large brick structure, two stories tall, with what appears to be a Second Empire style roof. The front held two generous storefronts flanking a narrow entry hall. The auditorium took up the entire rear of the building. There was a balcony, which various maps show in several forms.
By 1900 at least, movies were added to the program. It was renamed Palace Theatre in 1914 and continued to screen movies until 1919. The theatre appears to still be in operation on the 1919 map. Stage and scenery remained to the end. This building was demolished sometime around 1920 and was shortly thereafter replaced by the only remaining building on the block today, which may have originally been a gas station.
The 1905-6 Cahn guide calls this the ‘Theatre Newport’, but states that show bills should read ‘Newport Opera House’.
