Grand Central Cinema

In the Rutherglen district of Glasgow, the Grand Central Cinema was opened on 17th March 1921 by Grand Central (Rutherglen) Ltd. The architect was S. Adams and there were 950 seats. The main attraction on screen at the opening ceremony was the drama “Wolves of the Range” starring Jack Livingstone, while Mr Powell Edwards, principal baritone of the Beecham Opera, gave a recital.

During the silent era the Grand Central Cinema was apparently an outstanding success, and it adapted well to the talkies (with a Western Electric(WE) sound system being installed). However, in the post-war period, it began to be marginalised by the larger super cinemas. Too narrow to be fitted with a CinemaScope screen, and plagued by a constantly leaking roof, the Grand Central Cinema closed in December 1957, and was demolished. It was still under its original ownership, with the seating capacity slightly reduced to 921.
