The Northamptonshire town of Daventry had been without a cinema since the ‘new’ Regal Cinema closed in March 1999 (see separate Cinema Treasures entry). However, planning permission was granted in February 2019 for a new £12.5m leisure and restaurant quarter, to be called Mulberry Place.
Consisting of a four screen cinema, two restaurants and a public square with decorative fountains, this was built on the town centre site of the library, which moved to modern premises in the nearby Abbey building in Market Square.
Construction began in October 2019, with the council working with main contractor Willmott Dixon, architects Marchini Curran Associates and Arc Cinemas. It was initially hoped that the scheme would be completed by Spring 2021, and then that the cinema would be open for Christmas 2021. However, aside from issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, further delays resulted from Willmott Dixon having to remedy defects related to the ceiling support system that affected all four auditoriums, which prevented Arc from completing their fit out.
The Arc Cinema eventually opened on Friday 4th March 2022. The opening films were Kenneth Branagh’s drama “Belfast”, musical romance “Cyrano”, animated children’s film “Sing 2”, “Uncharted”, starring Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson as “The Batman”.
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:77, Screen 2:121, Screen 3:84 and Screen 4:79. All auditoriums have luxury electric recliner seating and there is the usual café/bar.
