They need to build a state if the art movie theatre over there and a new fitness center. It would be good revenue for the business and the community.
UPDATE: The mall that housed Northwest 9 cine has been torn down… Only the office building connected with the mall still stands… A Menards store now sits at the site.
Thank you Marcel!!! I wonder how many other theaters had you buy your tickets downstairs and then take an escalator upstairs to see the movie. I guess Wehrenberg (or mall management) thought that would make the theater unique…don’t think it worked…
I’m adding a photo of the actual 9 screen theatre that was inside the adjacent mall. A 1991 photo.
Personal note here: Although I went to this theater a few times in the two years before left St. Louis (1989-90), I never liked this theater nearly as much as the old 4-screen outlot theater. I’ve told this story on different sites, but the last time I went here was to see “Ghost” on a rainy Sunday evening. When I got home and turned on the 10 o'clock news, I found out there had been a shooting in the food court while my friends and I were watching the movie. Needless to say, I never went back to this theater after that…
That status now applied to the entire mall, not just the theater!

i was a projectionist at the northwest 9…..it was never owned by anyone else other than wehrenberg theaters…..wehrenberg bought out all of general cinemas theaters in missouri…..on the west side of the parking lot was a four screen theater that wehrenberg ran until the inside the mall 9 screen was done….it was built on the old famous barr furniture part of the mall….wehrenberg closed it and no one reopened it…..it was closed due to the mall turning into a junk house, with no patrons….most of the large stores have left the mall now and it only has two anchors…..the mall is over 80 percent empty…..wehrenberg was smart enough to get out before the mall fell completely apart….
The Northwest Plaza 9 Cine was opened November 17, 1989 by Wehrenberg Theatres. This was inside the mall after it had been reconfigured into an enclosed shopping center. It was not a physical redo of the Northwest Plaza that was opened by GCC in 1969 which was in a seperate building on the grounds of the shopping center.
The Northwest 9 Cine closed due to many reasons. There was extensive damage done to the theatre due to a bad roof. One of the auditoriums had a huge leaking hole in the roof. The management (Westfield) of the mall refused to fix it. The theatre had very low attendance and a high rate of employee theft.
Northwest 9 Cine quietly ceased operation after the showings of September 7, 2005.
Incidentally, theatre began operation in December, 1989.
A few clarifications. This theatre opened in the late 80s/early 90’s (don’t quite know the exact opening date, but I first visited the theatre in the summer of 1991). It was not an expansion of the Northwest Plaza 4 (which sat on the outskirts of the Northwest Plaza parking lot); rather it was a new Wehrenberg theatre built within the Northwest Plaza mall.
