The Royal Theatre was located across the street from the Palace Theatre on Macdonell Street in downtown Guelph. Opened around 1935, the 986-seat single-screen Royal was operated by Famous Players until 1958. The Royal Theatre building, which still stands today, was later converted for other uses and currently houses a nightclub and bar called Trappers Alley (which, although officially addressed to 100 Carden Street, has its main entrance on Macdonell Street).

The Royal Theatre at Guelph was designed in 1934 for developer Joseph Wolfond by the city’s leading architect, William Austin Mahoney. As the project was announced in December, 1933, it was probably opened before the end of 1934.
