The town of St. Edward, NE has only one theatre in its history, the Lyric Theatre. Opening in 1909, the theatre had a mix of motion pictures and performances.
The theatre did wire for sound but was unknown when it occurred. The system was later reinstalled with the installation of BestTone’s Sound-On-Film system on October 16, 1930.
On June 28, 1931, projectionist Bud Verhaege was running a test film on his projector shortly after its projector was repaired, when the reel suddenly burst into flames. He rushed down to extinguish it with the extinguisher but it was “no-good” he replied. He called the fire department by phone in Curtis CafĂ©, across the area from the Lyric Theatre. The theatre was damaged by a fire from the projection booth. After calling the fire department, he rushed back up to extinguish some more until the fire department arrived in code 3. The theatre lost an estimate $300 in damage but was able to remodel it. The theatre reopened a week later with new projection.
The theatre continued into World War II and into the Korean war era. However, right after 1949 ended, the St. Edward Advance stopped posting advertisements for the Lyric Theatre downtown. After diving down for a bit, the theatre still runs films but right when the mid-1950’s go along (and into the early-1960’s), it primarily had stuck with special events.
It is unknown when the theatre closed its doors.
