In Plymouth, Devon, the Arts Institute (formerly Peninsula Arts) is the public arts programme of the University of Plymouth.
One of the Institute’s bases is the Roland Levinsky Building, which opened in September 2007 and is also home to the University’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business and its student information gateway. There are also lecture theatres, a restaurant, office spaces and general teaching areas.
(The building, and the Levinsky Gallery, are named after Professor Roland Levinsky. He was appointed a Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University in September 2002, but was killed in a freak accident when out walking in stormy weather, near his house, in Wembury, on New Year’s Day 2007, and he was electrocuted when high winds brought overhead power cables down.)
There is also the Jill Craigie Cinema, which aims “to provide a unique insight into films not available elsewhere in Plymouth or the South West, exploring hidden gems of past cinema, critical documentaries, and daring cult films that will inspire, scare and surprise.” Many screenings are supplemented by talks by directors, filmmakers and critics.
This is named after the filmmaker, screenwriter and feminist (1911-1999) whose early films demonstrated her interest in socialist and feminist politics. Unfortunately, her filmmaking career became somewhat eclipsed by her marriage to future Labour Party leader Michael Foot, whom she met during the making of her film “The Way We Live” (1946), a dramatized view of post-war reconstruction in Plymouth, although she did become an authority on the suffragette movement.
