The Downtown Cinema 8 opened in 2001 seating 1,746. Located right on the town square. The Downtown replaced the old Kennedy Theatre which was the old movie palace in downtown. At one time there were five indoor and one drive-in theatres in Kirksville. The Downtown Cinema 8 is the only one left. It has a nice spacious, well lit lobby with a game area, nice concessions stand, features six track digital sound in four auditoriums. All stadium seating and nice color schemes in each auditorium.

It didn’t really “replace” the Kennedy. When I came to Kirksville in 1994 the Kennedy was a bank parking lot. Most appropriately, it replaced the Petite 3 cinema out on 63 Hwy. While hardly a cinema treasure, it the Downtown 8 is decent for a town of 17,000, 90 miles from any real civilization.
Pretty shameful waste of the entire west side of the courthouse square. Better suited for sprawl on the highway.
