R.W. Merseal and J.E. Lythgoe of Missoula opened the Gayan Theatre August 20, 1949, with Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo in “A Song Is Born”.
Montana Theatre Supply designed and furnished the 506-seat theatre, which was located about seven miles from Columbia Falls.
The Hungry Horse News reported because of a heavy snow fall the roof collapsed New Year’s Eve 1951. The published photograph and reports showed there was not much remaining of the theatre, which had been closed for more than a year.
No wonder, by January 1952 123.6 inches of snow had fallen in Hungry Horse compared to a yearly average of 32 inches.
