The Strand Theatre was a 700-seat downtown venue that showed movies from 1916 to 1932 in Wakefield. The Strand Theatre operated with silent films until February 16, 1930 when it switched to talkies. The first sound film at the Strand Theatre was Joan Crawford in “Untamed”.
When the 1,200 seat Wakefield Community Theatre announced its plans to introduce full-time talkies, the Strand Theatre exited following the August 18, 1932, showing of “Border Law” with Buck Jones. At that time, it appeared to be run by a consortium of local merchants trying to keep the theatre going for the increased foot traffic downtown.
