The Garden Grove Theatre, constructed with concrete blocks, was listed on Sanborn Maps 1915 at 41 Euclid Avenue, now Main Street. Motion Picture News November 28, 1914, reported Harry Hunter, who also owned the Norwalk Theatre, sold his interests to his partner Max Alpert.
On the 1922 maps it became a grocery store and another theatre appeared at 4 Ocean Avenue or today’s 11000 Garden Grove Boulevard, Costco’s parking lot.
As for the Gem Theatre, the Santa Ana Register May 21, 1923, reported the start of construction of the new Garden Grove theatre, at Euclid Street and Acacia Parkway, to replace an earlier theatre, which the town had outgrown. H.P. Tibin, a real estate man, was backing construction of the 350-seat theatre to be managed by George Smiley. It was reported the previous April 23 that the old theatre had been sold to Mr. and Mrs. George Smiley.
