The town of Victoria was serviced in the silent era by the Rex Theatre / Victoria Theatre housed in the Anderson Building. But the cost of moving to sound during the Depression for a town of just 637 was too great and the Victoria Theatre’s movie fans had to drive 13 miles to Hays, Kansas for sound films. That is, until 1947 when the Gay Theatre launched on Main Street.
The Gay Theatre was the town’s post-War movie destination from 1947 until, apparently, 1955 when the theatre was offered for sale. The venue still stands as of the 2020’s and is now home to a funeral home.
