The Strand Theatre was a neighborhood theatre located in the Knoxville section of South Pittsburgh. This silent-era venue appears to have had much of its operational cycle during World War I and apparently ending in the early-1920’s. 500 patrons of a World War I newsreel were so moved by the war footage that they began chanting, “Hang the traitors and shoot the spies”. It was likely an uncomfortable sign for German immigrants in the Knoxville area that the neighborhood was making its views on World War I known. The venue didn’t convert to sound likely closing in 1922 and the building has since been razed. In 2022 the site is a vacant grassed lot.
