Located in the Te Aro district of the city centre. Built on the site of the Tivoli Theatre (ex Everybody’s Theatre/Opera House). The Regent Theatre was opened on December 10, 1926 with Ronald Colman in “Beau Geste”. It had a Neo-Classical designed façade, and the auditorium was decorated in an Atmospheric style, with twinkling stars and passing clouds in the ceiling and decorative gardens along the side-walls.
The Regent Theatre suffered considerable damage in the 1942 earthquake, and it didn’t reopen until 1944. Architect R. Lightbody was responsible for the repairs and strengthening the theatre. The Regent Theatre was closed in 1979 and was demolished by Kerridge-Odeon to build the Regent Centre 1-3 on the site (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
