This theatre appears on the 1918 Sanborn, in the rear of a simple two story wooden commercial building. The front contained a news-stand, and ‘Moving Pictures’ were in a one-story extension at the rear, above a bowling alley in the basement.
The 1908 map shows only the alley, and the structure was enlarged to create an auditorium.
The Modern Theatre was still open in 1936, with 126-seat. In 1937 it had been renamed Tumberlin Theatre, still with 126-seats. It was still open in 1938, but by 1939 a 240-seat Callicoon Theatre was the only theatre listed as open. The building is now home to an Italian restaurant.
While this was operating, Lower Main Street was simply Main Street, and Upper Main was School or Academy Street.
