Teatro Las Mascaras was a successful Latin American movie theatre that has also served under various operators as a Spanish-language live play venue, a dinner theatre, a Latin comedy club, and – most recently – a house of worship. The 200-seat venue appears to have opened in 1979 as Las Mascaras II, a Latin comedy club in a non-descript strip plaza called the Shops of Seventh Street. That got a quick hook and was converted to Mascaras Cinema opening on February 2, 1981 with repertory Spanish-language films. Up first was Imperio Argentina in “Morena Clara.”
Operating in proximity to the Trianon Cinema about a mile away, the two venues offered very different Spanish-language fare for their audiences. The venue became Teatro Las Mascaras programming some live plays and specialized in Spanish-language cinema with a focus on Cuban cinema.
Programming film became more complicated into the 21st Century with competition from home video, the internet, and beyond. The venue was next listed as Caffe Teatro Mascaras performing dinner theatre in Spanish. In April of 2008, it became Teatro América, a live venue no longer serving food. It had its last staged production on February 12, 2012 and the building left the entertainment stage.
The location was converted to a house of worship in the mid-2010’s. The second and most current occupant is Ministerio Cristiano Monte Sion. Pictures in the 2020’s show the original theatre seats in place.
