Tom Ratliff Civic Theatre

According to the Eldorado Success newspaper, Mr. and Mrs. T.K. Jones built a new theatre in town by August of 1930. Miss Faye Bell Enochs won the $5 cash prize for suggesting “Lone Star Theatre” as the new name. The theatre opened with the movies “Sundown Rider”, “Song of Songs”, “Midnight Club”, and “The Good Companions”. Mr. and Mrs. Jones sold the theatre in October of 1944 to H.F. Donaldson of Sterling City according to an article in the Eldorado Success on October 27, 1944. The building was being leased by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hart. The theatre appears to have closed its doors in December 1955 and sat vacant according to the newspaper. Tom Ratliff purchased the theatre building and had it remodeled for his insurance business. He apparently left the auditorium and stage intact. The Eldorado Success explains that Winnie Helen Ratliff donated the building to be used for civic use and the Way Off Broadway Players' Production on March 16, 1994. The theatre was to be renamed, the “Tom Ratliff Civic Theatre” in memory of her husband.
