Cinema Victoria

In Timisoara, western Romania, it is not known when Cinema Urania originally opened but, in 1947, it was renamed Cinema Victoria. In 1974, as part of a road development scheme, the cinema was closed and the building was demolished.

In 1976 the current Cinema Victoria opened on an adjacent site. It was operated by Romania Film, and became one of the most beloved cinemas in the city.

Despite this success, in 2000 Cinema Victoria closed. The foyer became home to a medical clinic, while a disco occupied the auditorium.

However, in 2017, the city council took ownership of the building and began an extensive (11m lei [£1.9m]) renovation, mainly to provide a much-needed cultural ‘hub’ in the Balcescu neighbourhood.

The fully restored Cinema Victoria re-opened in early-2022 as a multi-purpose venue, presenting film shows alongside theatre performances, dance, concerts and other live shows.

To facilitate this multi-purpose function, the 8m by 4m screen is retractable. A Barco 2k 9S laser projector is supported by a Dolby Surround sound system. The stage measures 9m by 6m.
