Gulf State Theatres opened the Harbor Cinema at the now-defunct Punta Gorda Mall Shopping Center on June 1, 1967 with David Niven in “Casino Royale”.
The Harbor Cinema started life with a capacity of 415 rocking chair seats (although it was originally planned for a capacity of 600 seats right when the cinema started construction in August 1966), a large panorama screen, and a stereophonic sound system. It was first managed by Edward Kennedy, with the theater designed by Thomas D. Millin of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
It was the single-screener throughout its history. The Harbor Cinema closed for the final time on September 9, 1982 with Lawrence Monoson in “The Last American Virgin”.
When Hurricane Charley struck the heart of Florida in 2004, the Punta Gorda Mall where the theater once operated suffered major destruction after Charley made landfall as a Category 4 storm with 145 MPH winds on August 13 of that same year.
