The 300-seat Palace Theatre’s opened by 1935 and was first operated by Charles Powell. It had a couple of remodels throughout the duration of World War II. One of which was in early-September 1942 and it reopened with the additional adds of 108 balcony seats, and another remodel took place in August 1945 with installations of refrigerated air conditioning.
The Palace Theatre closed as a movie house for the final time in on November 21, 1955 with Gene Kelly in 1945’s “Anchors Aweigh” along with an unnamed cartoon and a newsreel. However, the Palace Theatre managed to continue operating as a special events house for only a very short time. That stunt lasted until less than the following year when the theater building was converted into office space.
The building decades later was demolished in 2014.

The Palace was one of four indoor theaters in Gatesville in 1947, according to this item from the April 4 issue of Film Daily: “Skeltons Add Two More. Gatesville, Tex.—Charles C. Powell has sold the Palace and Texas to Joe, Max and H. B. Skelton, owners of the town’s other two houses, the Ritz and Regal.”
