The Kobe Kokusai Shochiku (or the Kobekokusaishochiku Kino Cinema) is a 4-screen theater located inside the 11th floor of the Kobe International House in the Hyogo Ward of the city.
The 4-screener replaced two different cinemas in the area, the Kokusai Nikkatsu and the Kokusai Shochiku. Both theaters closed when the Great Hanshin earthquake rocked the Hyogo Prefecture on January 17, 1995. Because of the earthquake, most of the movie theaters in Kobe were destroyed and forced to suspend operations.
The Kobe Kokusai Shochiku opened its doors on April 22, 1999 as a replacement of the nearby Big Eigeki which closed four days prior. The quad originally had a capacity of 685 seats (148 at Screen 1, 204 at Screen 2, 130 at Screen 3, and 145 at Screen 4) but was downgraded prior to its March 17, 2022 closure due to lease expiration to 516 seats (120 at Screen 1, 152 at Screen 2, 99 at Screen 3, and 145 at Screen 4).
After its March 17, 2022 closure, it lasted for a short time. The Kino Cinema chain took over the theater and reopened it on April 1, 2022. As of today, it currently screens mainly Japanese live-action and anime films as well as Indie films and some American first-run films at rare occasions.
