The Osceola Theatre was built on the site of the former first Lyric Theatre located at the north side of the square, which closed on December 26, 1934 following relocation. The first Lyric Theatre closed two days before the second (and current) Lyric Theatre’s grand opening at the west side of the square.
After the former first Lyric Theatre building was demolished in February 1935, E.L. Bryant of Zearing announced that a new theater will be built at the same site of the former first Lyric Theatre.
The Osceola Theatre will later open its doors on April 12, 1935 with Eddie Cantor in “Kid Millions” along with Walt Disney’s Silly Symphony “Funny Little Bunnies” and a Fox Movietone Newsreel.
Both the Lyric Theatre and the Osceola Theatre throughout the 1940’s and early-1950’s shared an equal and fair amount of first-run features each week, but it wasn’t until right after CinemaScope was introduced to the world when things started to get loose and broken off.
The Osceola Theatre faced trouble in March 1954 after it went on a sellout, and it changed its policy to a “second/third-run” theatre showing previous first-run features in the past few years or more. This left the Lyric Theatre as the only first-run and mainstream movie house in Osceola.
During its final years of operation, the Osceola Theatre closed for the final time in 1956.
