Bathgate Cinema

In Bathgate, West Lothian, St David’s Church and Hall opened 1904, designed by James Graham Fairley.

It was Category ‘B’ listed in July 1994. It is unclear when it was deconsecrated, but it was acquired by leisure company Chalmers Group (headed by Andrew Henderson) in 2012 and converted into a nightclub.

Around May 2016, the venue was converted by Chalmers Group into the Bathgate Cinema. Initially there were two screens, with Screen 1, in the former church, having moveable sofas and tables, and Screen 2, presumably in the former church hall, having more conventional cinema seating, but at some time a rather more modest third screen was added. (All are on the ground floor.)

Seating capacities are: Screen 1:96, Screen 2:82 and Screen 3:11.

It is believed that Chalmers leases the building. In November 2023 the building was put up ‘For Sale’ by the Chalmers Group, for £500,000. It was subsequently acquitted by Centre Point Church, which intends to convert it back to a place of worship. The Bathgate Cinema was closed on 18th March 2024.

Discussions were held with management of the Reconnect Regal Theatre, the former Regal Cinema (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures) but they were unwilling to add films to their programming. So the town is, once again, without a cinema.
