In Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Chalmers Church was formed in 1843 at the time of the Disruption by seceders from St Mungo’s, the town’s parish church. Known at first as Alloa West Free Church then, after 1900, as Chalmers United Free Church, the congregation initially worshipped at Cunningham Close, then moved to this site in Bank Street following the construction of the Chalmers United Free Church of Scotland in 1855-56. This had been designed by Liverpool-based architects J, W H & J M Hay.
In 1929 the church joined the Church of Scotland. Then, in 1970, it joined with St Andrew’s Church to form Alloa North Church, which was, and still is, based at the old St Andrew’s building in Ludgate.
The building was Category ‘B’ listed in June 1972.
It is not known what happened to the building once the congregation had moved out but, at some time, it was leased by leisure company Chalmers, headed by local businessman Andrew Henderson, and became Chalmers nightclub.
On Wednesday 20th September 2017, Alloa Cinema opened within the venue, with “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”, starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, as the first attraction. Initially, this was only part-time, as the venue still operated as a nightclub on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
However, later on, the cinema became a full-time operation. It is furnished with a mixture of large, very comfortable three and two-seat sofas.
