The Movie Theatre opened in 1914. The Movie Theatre was just a small sub run house located a few blocks from the busy Union Station. In 1915 it became an African-American theatre. It was remedeled in 1930, reopening on May 24, 1930 and renamed New Movie Theatre. It was listed as (Closed) between 1941 and 1943. It reopened and stayed around until the travel by trains had dwindled to nothing and closed in 1950 when the area was set to be redeveloped.

This theatre was in operation at least as early as 1914 when a building permit was issued to “alter picture show.”

The address, 2351, puts it on the north side of Market Street…the MSD is on the south side.

Hi again.

This theater was one of the earliest (third behind the World’s Dream Theater and Brighton Theater) theaters owned and maintained by Thomas and John James. According to the St. Louis Argus the theater was a community favorite for its cheap shows, diverse offerings and comfortable confines. I’ve uploaded a few clippings to illustrate.

Also, in April of 1916 the theater was expanded to include an airdome at 2126 Market—see Argus clipping.

The Movie Theater opened in 1914 and its second owner was 20-year old Tom James of the Brighton Airdome and World’s Dream Theatre. In 1915, he repositioned the venue for African American audiences. The Movie Theatre added sound and was remodeled reopening on May 24, 1930 likely on a new 20-year lease and rebranded as the New Movie Theater. Because, why not? In 1950, the theater was offered for sale after closing.
