The Russell Opera House was located in the Russell House, a large hotel that was constructed sometime before 1897. The building was two stories with brick veneer over a wooden frame. The auditorium was oddly set up, occupying the basement and ground floor, with hotel rooms above.
Sometime between 1900 and 1909, the auditorium was extended to the rear, and made more substantial by the use of stone in the addition. This likely happened before 1905, as that year’s Cahn guide gives the same capacity as later listings. Films began to be shown by 1914, and by 1926, this was renamed the Russell Theatre. It had disappeared from listings by 1930.
This hotel seems to have been demolished around 1940 and replaced by the Humboldt Hotel, which itself has been replaced by an ugly bank building which might be from the 1980’s.
