The Grosvenor Picture Palace was the first purpose-built cinema in the town of Aldershot, Hampshire. The cinema was designed by architects Friend & Lloyd, based in Aldershot. Built at the rear of the Queen Hotel and adjacent to a public house that was built on the site of a former music hall on the corner of Union Street & Grosvenor Road. Built to serve the growing entertainment needs of the rapidly expanding military town known as the home of the British Army. The Grosvenor Picture Palace was opened on 28th April 1910.
It had a single screen, single floor auditorium that was equipped with tip-up chairs. Interestingly, it held Saturday afternoon matinées for children. Piano accompaniment was by a Mr. C.H. Woolnoth who had been a student of music at the Leipzig Conservatorium of Music. Not much is known about the Grosvenor Picture Palace except that it was fairly basic and had a short life, having closed by 1918.
