The Tudor Cinema opened on 24th June 1957 at 53 Main Street. ‘It is the intention of this cinema to promote intelligent entertainment for the discriminating patron,’ said the advertising blurb.
The opening report in the County Down Spectator (29th June) said the entrance and main hall were ‘artistically decorated to give an atmosphere of antiquity. The entrance gives the impression of an old stone passage, and the walls are hung with shields, crossed swords and related paraphernalia. There were also comfortable roomy seats and pleasant surroundings.’
It’s unclear as to who owned the Tudor Cinema in its early days. The Adelphi Cinema (only a few doors away – see separate Cinema Treasures entry) appear to have been involved with the New Theatre (a short-lived live performance venture which had occupied the premises prior to the Tudor Cinema opening). The local Spectator (28th Feb 1958) carried a shared advert for the Adelphi Cinema and the Tudor Cinema, which may have implied common ownership. This is confirmed by the Kine Year Book 1962 edition which shows the Adelphi Cinema Co. as the owner of the Tudor Cinema. The Tudor Cinema appears to have closed around 15th September 1962.
It has been demolished and a bar named The Goat’s Toe now occupies the site.
