This theatre opened January 24, 1898 in a freshly remodeled building. Originally constructed sometime before 1883 as county offices and the post office (and apparently known as the Sherman Block), the two story building was given a high mansard roof, subsuming the tower originally on the corner. A small office annex at the rear of the building was replaced by a three story stage tower, and a deep balcony was installed. The ground floor was converted for commercial use. In 1903 it was renamed Melba Theatre, but this only lasted a few days.
The owner, E.A. Sherman, had attempted to replicate New York’s Empire Theatre, and the auditorium featured painted clouds and electric lighting. Sometime in 1909, the first movies were shown. The last show was May 2, 1914, and the building was demolished by 1916 to be replaced by the Security National Bank, which remains on the site today.

The New Theatre was briefly renamed the Melba Theatre in 1903, but was reverted back to its New Theatre name for unknown reasons a few days later.
