Fayette Opera House

The Fayette Opera House opened its doors on March 25, 1889 with a live presentation of “A Paper Doll” with a capacity of 1,000 seats after it took six months to build the opera house itself at a cost of $40,000, and was first operated by H.L. Hunter.

On January 10, 1902, the Fayette Opera House alongside several other business were destroyed by a large fire entailing a loss of around $80,000. One of the other businesses that was gutted by the large blaze is the J.D. Tolson’s business building where the fire originated. The opera house received the most costly estimate of $40,000 in damages, while the rest of the other 40K came from other businesses, including $12,000 of damage from the Sig Kaufman shoe store and $8,000 of damage from the L.C. Tolson farming implements and wagons store among others.

The opera house was rebuilt the following year and reopened in September 1903 with a given capacity of 800 seats. The management lightly downgraded their capacity of seats due to Howard County’s ban on “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” shows.

Its final closing date remains unknown at this time.
