Veteran film operator Edward J. Whitley launched the Aquadale Theatre in the diminutive community in North Carolina. The Aquadle Theatre was situated in the old Lanning Hosiery Mill building. The converted mill turned 200-seat theatre was open three days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday - with two shows daily. Albert T. Smith was the theater’s manager. The building became available when A.L. Landing moved the mill from this location after a fire to a new one in June of 1948.

The Aquadale Theatre opened October 5, 1948. Whitley dropped the theatre following the February 5, 1948 showing of “Lone Star Marshall”. After being used for live music events, the Aquadale Theatre on June 25, 1949 resuming movies. The operation continued to struggle in the tiny town closing permanently. Both building were offered for sale after the mill (and theater well before it) had closed in 1967/8.
