Situated in Laupheim, in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, the Museum of the History of Christians and Jews, in the historic Grosslaupheim Castle, opened in 1998. In the 19th century, the town’s Jewish community was the largest in Württemberg, but it was decimated in 1942. The survivors and descendants created this museum as a symbol of reconciliation between Christians and Jews, using Laupheim as an example.
Meanwhile, Carl Laemmle, founder of the Universal Pictures, had been born in Laupheim in 1867. Despite emigrating to the USA in 1884, he never lost contact with his home-town, returning on a regular basis and providing financial assistance in particular times of hardship.
After leaving the film business in 1936, he campaigned on behalf of Jews who were being persecuted and issued over 300 “guarantees” (of work) that made their emigration to the USA possible. He died shortly after the outbreak of World War II, on 24th September 24th 1939.
The ground floor of the museum celebrates Carl Laemmle’s life and work, and includes a very comfortable, ‘boutique’-style public cinema, sometimes referred to as Carl’s Kino im Schloss.
