Grove Cinema

In Hythe, Kent, the Grove Cinema opened on 16th May 1927, a direct replacement for the Picture Palace (see separate Cinema Treasures entry) which had closed on 9th April 1927.

The single floor auditorium (originally with 694 seats) had pinewood block flooring and an orange and light blue colour scheme. During the remaining few years of the silent films, the shows were augmented by Harold Taylor and his Orchestra.

Sound films arrived in 1930, the first being “Flight”, starring Jack Holt and Lila Lee. A Western Electric(WE) sound system had been installed.

Around 1939 London & Provincial Cinemas acquired the cinema from Hythe Picture Palace (1913) Ltd.

The Grove Cinema closed on 1st March 1958 with “Man of a Thousand Faces”, starring James Cagney.

The building became a car showroom, but that appears to have been demolished, as there is now a car park on the cinema’s site at the junction of Prospect Road and Mount Street.
